Refractive Surgery
Today, refractive laser therapy is one of the most important treatments in which the developing technology is applied in the field of health. Excimer laser therapy is the basic and most reliable method used in the surgical treatment of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism diseases, which are frequently seen in young patients. This treatment method can be performed in people whose cornea layer, located in the front of the eye if suitable for surgery. This suitability can be understood by the examination performed by an experienced ophthalmologist and then by some tests. The most suitable patients for this treatment are those with myopia in the range of 1.50 to 8.00 diopters and astigmatism in the range of 1.50 to 4.00 diopters.
HOW LASER TREATMENT IS APPLIED
Refractive surgery is a painless procedure performed under topical anesthesia with anesthetic drops instilled into the eye. Patients generally adapt easily to the surgery. However, in very anxious patients, sedatives can be given just before the operation when necessary. The total duration of the procedure usually does not exceed 15 minutes. The most important laser step during the procedure usually takes a short time, between 10 and 60 seconds. In the meantime, patients are asked to look at the fixation light shown on the device.
HOW MANY DAYS ARE REQUIRED FOR LASER TREATMENT
Patients who will undergo laser treatment are required to leave contact lenses at least 3 weeks ago if they use soft contact lenses for at least 2 weeks and hard contact lenses for at least 2 weeks. In all patients who meet these conditions, laser surgery can be performed 2 days after the detailed examination. It will be very useful for our patients who will come to surgery from abroad or from outside the city to take this detail into account. Eyes do not need to be bandage after surgery. Patients are discharged with only a protective goggle. It is extremely important to avoid rubbing the eyes in the first days and to use the recommended drops carefully. Patients can return to their daily lives without glasses a few days after the surgery.
ARE THERE OBSTACLES TO LASER TREATMENT?
As in all medical applications, there are some obstacles for laser treatment. The most important among these is corneal ectatic disease such as Keratoconus. Apart from this, some of the undesirable conditions are to have undergone an important ocular surgery such as pregnancy, severe dry eye, uncontrolled diabetes, hereditary eye disease, presence of glaucoma and retinal detachment. Apart from these, all diseases and drug use should be carefully questioned in order to evaluate each patient carefully and to rule out possible risks.
